Retiring Brits look abroad for active lifestyle

Mar. 27th 2008

New research suggests that soon to be British retirees are no longer content to just relax and stay at home.

After a survey of people nearing the end of their working lives results showed that many had a number of ambitions that they wanted to follow and achieve as they start their retirement.

One of the most interesting of the results was that almost 20 percent suggested that they would like to move area at the beginning of retirement. More surprisingly though, many were found to be eager to search beyond the UK to look for their dream retirement home. In fact 52% said they would like to move abroad.

Gary Shaughnessy from Prudential commented: “Those retiring today are likely to be able to enjoy far more active lives through their pensionable years than any previous generation.”

In another survey it turns out that around 9 out of 10 ex-Brits are financially better off after their relocation abroad.

Housing market heading back on track

Mar. 25th 2008

Although it may be true that over the past few months the housing market has been struggling, latest results suggest that they may be on the mend.

Righmove have apparently reported that of the 10 regions it records across England and Wales, average prices fell in only two - the West Midlands and East Anglia.

It does seem though, that the biggest increase was in Wales, where the average home sold for 3.5pc more than in February.

If you are moving house make sure you use a clean, dry & secure self-storage company like Smart Storage - The North West’s premier self storage company.

Removal Industry Issued With New Code Of Practice

Mar. 10th 2008

In February The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) approved a new code of practice for members of the British Association of Removers (BAR).
Aiming to guarantee a high quality of service and financial protection for people moving home, the code, is currently the only one approved by the OFT for the UK removals industry

All BAR members are required to follow the code, which will dictate the standard of service customers will have to receive. This ensures the quality of the materials used, the standards of warehouses and vehicles, staff-training requirements and procedures in the event of something going wrong during the moving process.

The code requires BAR moving companies to ensure their promotional literature gives an accurate description of services provided, to provide customers with a clear timetable and price for the work carried out, as well as explaining their liability for loss or damage.

The code also states that, if a moving company cancels a removal less than 10 days before the agreed date it must refund 150% of the fee.

UK Housing Market - Well Supported

Mar. 6th 2008

According to the latest Halifax House Price Index, the average price of a property in the UK housing market was £196,649 in February.

Martin Ellis, Halifax Chief Economist commented on the figures and suggested that strong underlying fundamentals are supporting the UK housing market.

“Over the past year, the average price of a home in the UK has increased by £4,390 to £196,649,” he revealed.

“Whilst the housing market has slowed over the past six months, it is supported by sound economic fundamentals.

“Interest rate cuts by the Bank of England are also helping to underpin house prices,” added Mr Ellis.

The Land Registry’s latest figures have revealed that house prices increased by 0.9 per cent between December 2007 and January 2008.
