Are you looking to maximise your storage space? Packing a storage unit may not be very difficult but, by putting some thought behind it, you can make the most of the space in your unit and even save money! After all, many people believe they need a bigger storage unit than they actually need, simply because they’re not using the storage unit efficiently. That’s where we can help.
Take a look at our tips to maximise your storage space and ensure your belongings are perfectly packed (on top of this, we also offer all the boxes and packaging you could possibly require and you can get them delivered too!).
Sure, right now, you still remember where you put everything. You know that smaller box is for books, the larger ones have knick-knacks, and so on; but what about a few months from now? What if you really need that kitchen appliance or the sports equipment you stored ages ago – will you still remember where everything is? Plan for the future by making sure all of your boxes have labels. It will make unpacking a lot easier.
Create an Organised Layout
Whether or not you’re going to access your unit regularly, it’s important that you plan the layout of the storage space. After all, it’s easier to streamline the way you store your boxes and bulky items by planning ahead than to just keep adding things in a disorganised way until you’ve run out of available space – and can’t seem to find anything in there!
Placing heavy items against the walls while leaving paths in the middle is a great way to ensure you can access your boxes whenever you want.
You might also consider drawing up a plan to remind you where each box is located inside your unit.
Keep Most-Used Items at the Front
Make your life easier and ensure your unit is organised by storing the items you use the most at the front of your unit and those you are unlikely to need for a while – at the back. If you don’t follow a system like this, you will find yourself digging through your unit to get to the ones you need. Not only is this annoying it will also frustrate you – especially if you’re in a hurry.
Make Use of Vertical Space
Whether you choose to use shelving or just stack boxes on top of one another, the important thing is that you’re using more of the available space in your unit. Don’t waste valuable vertical space – if you fear that stacking boxes will lead to damaged items, opt for shelves. Make sure to orient some items vertically too; for example, if you have a mattress to store, place it against a wall to maximise your space.
Line the Walls with Your Belongings
Don’t forget to take advantage of the walls of your storage unit either. This will be incredibly advantageous to you as you keep adding your possessions to the unit, so that you don’t run out of space too quickly. You may want to create aisles between different rows of boxes so that you can find anything you want with ease.
Take Your Furniture Apart
This may be the last thing you want to do… disassembling furniture is a hassle. However, there is no denying that doing this will save a lot of space. Pieces of furniture, from your dresser to your wardrobe, are bulky and take up a lot of room inside your unit. So, by taking it all apart, you can store more items inside your unit and make it easier to access your other belongings.
Upgrade When Needed
When you pack your unit, you need to consider how often you will need to access your belongings whilst they’re in storage. Sure, you can make use of every little bit of space in your unit, but if you need to retrieve items on a regular basis just imagine how difficult it would be if the unit is stuffed full. While it’s important that you make the most out of your storage unit, it’s also crucial that you don’t overdo it.
If you find that your unit has reached its full capacity, why not upgrade to a larger space? You can upsize (or downsize) without penalty.
